An Employability Double For Accounting Students

Last week, our BAcc employability team and Careers Service encouraged students to think about life after graduation with a new event: “The Application Process”.

Fourth year accounting students had the opportunity boost their graduate prospects by learning about psychometric testing, assessment centres, different types of interviews and CV advice. We were delighted to welcome along Rebecca Sharp and Jane Sim from Hays Recruitment. They gave their expert opinion and offered personalised advice to help improve student CV’s.

We’re looking forward to having Rebecca back at UWS on the 21st February for our next employability event for 2nd and 3rd year students. More details coming soon!

The UWS Accounting Society hosted our afternoon session, focusing on “What Can I do With an Accounting degree”. Our accounting students already know they can choose to work in the profession or as an accountant in business, but some of our graduates have followed other paths.

Lindsay McDonald, UWS Careers Advisor, explained the route accountants can take into teaching and we were delighted to have former student, Samantha Mathieson, with us to reflect on her postgraduate studies. Find out more about available UWS postgraduate courses here.

Students also had the opportunity to hear from four speakers who chatted about their careers and how they got to where they are now including:

Michael Forbes, UWS BAcc graduate, HMRC

Karen Gould, Financial Accountant, SAMH

Samantha Mathieson, UWS BAcc and MSc Accounting and Finance Graduate, CIMA

Gary McWee, UWS BAcc Graduate, NHS

Karen: “I was really honoured to be invited to the UWS’s employability event today to speak about alternative careers paths in accountancy. Amazing staff and students and a great day!

We managed to grab the speakers before they left for the day to ask for their top tips which are useful for any student! Take a look at the video below to see what they said.

Thanks to all our brilliant speakers and to our students for getting stuck in on the day! Keep an eye out for future events on our Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn pages.
