Dr John Quinn is a lecturer in Screen and Performance at the University of the West of Scotland. Working within the division of Arts & Media, John’s research explores the narratives and cultural politics of popular culture. With a particular focus on popular film and television.
He recently published an open article with Cinephile on the Alien Franchise. According to the Editor of The Cinephile, "This particular Cinephile issue implores us to consider the little things—the comparably smaller, sometimes ephemeral media texts that orbit the edges of film and television culture. From movie reviews to end credits, ‘making of’ featurettes to fan-created YouTube videos, this issue considers those ancillary components that frame and shape our everyday encounters with screen media. […] Writing specifically on fan-created ‘explained’ or ‘lore’ videos shared on YouTube, Quinn considers how online platforms hybridize with paratexts to extend narrative engagement and consumer experiences."
