Professor David McGillivray is a Lecturer in the School of Media, Culture and Society. He has two main areas of research expertise. The first focuses on the contemporary significance of events and festivals (sporting and cultural) as markers of identity and mechanisms for the achievement of wider economic, social and cultural externalities. Second, I have expertise in the affordances of digital and social media in enabling (and contraining) participation in civic life, including in educational settings and in democratic processes.
He recently started a research project with FestSpace called "Stories from the Streets", this initiative wants to generate a picture of the sorts of informal or spontaneous festivities or social experiences that have emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic from March-July 2020 in the city of Glasgow and surrounding areas.
